How do you build a data strategy and infrastructure that can deliver insights across both public and private assets when the needs aren’t the same? Julie Gerdeman, global head of data and analytics at BNY will discuss this question in a session titled “Data strategies: achieving the single pane of glass” at the upcoming PostTrade 360° 2025 conference.
Note: Julie Gerdeman’s participation with the PostTrade 360° 2025 session was replaced with Tony Evans, Managing Director, BNY Data & Analytics.
Investment managers are increasingly aware that data is a driver for growth – so much so that the vast majority expect to increase their investment in data technology over the next three to five years.
The concept of the “single source of truth” as a foundational element of any data strategy has driven investments in data governance, stewardship, quality, cataloguing, security, privacy, and integration.
“These elements are certainly table stakes, but even organisations ahead of the data strategy maturity curve have been operating in silos when it comes to accessibility and visualisation of the data,” explains Gerdeman. “Now we are in the next frontier – the ‘single pane of glass’ – which raises the bar towards a comprehensive view of the data to drive decision making across asset classes, investment groups, and regions.”
Different metrics
The growth in private market assets under management (AUM), which is projected to expand at more than double the rate of private assets to reach US$60 trillion by 2032, makes this topic particularly relevant.
“With this trend comes the challenges of onboarding unstructured data efficiently and with high quality and providing detailed insights that differ from the traditional metrics used for public assets,” adds Gerdeman, who says the session will be particularly useful for business and tech leaders.
Build a diverse team
Investment managers focused on improving their digital maturity can benefit from the optimal mix of partners to architect their data operating model – hyperscalers such as Microsoft, fintechs with data management expertise and domain knowledge, and consultants that can help them transform their operating models with a focus on data centricity.
“Generative AI has enormous potential to help investment managers navigate these challenges but the use of these emerging technologies must be balanced with risk mitigation and regulatory concerns,” says Gerdeman. “For private markets in particular, data integrity, privacy, security, and regulatory compliance are paramount.”
