Euroclear Nordics has joined the Capital Markets Track of Nordic Compass, an industry initiative focused on strengthening capital markets across the region.
The membership brings the Swedish and Finnish central securities depositories (CSDs) into the initiative, where they will contribute expertise in market infrastructure and investment flows. The move is part of Euroclear’s ambition to establish one CSD for the Nordic region by 2030. Denmark is currently in development, with Norway planned as the next market, according to the announcement.
Nordic Compass aims to identify actions to improve access to capital and investment opportunities across the region. Euroclear said its contribution would focus on reducing market barriers and improving the movement of capital between markets.
Preparing for T+1 and tokenisation
The initiative also addresses changes in securities markets, including shorter settlement cycles such as T+1 and the development of digital and tokenised financial markets. Euroclear said harmonised processes, technology and resilient infrastructure would be important to supporting these developments.
The initiative aligns with the EU’s Savings and Investments Union, which aims to reduce fragmentation between European markets and direct savings towards productive investment.
“Through a shared roadmap combining greater harmonisation with the distinctive features of local markets, we aim to simplify post-trade processes, strengthen resilience and deliver a more consistent client experience”, said Hanna Vainio, CEO of Euroclear Nordics. “Through the Nordic Compass, we will bring regional expertise and broader European perspective to a collective effort to make capital markets more connected, efficient and competitive — helping investment flow more freely across the Nordics and beyond.”
