Clearstream, part of Deutsche Börse Group, is launching a crypto asset custody service for institutional clients in April . This new offering will allow institutions to access cryptocurrency custody and settlement services through Clearstream’s existing infrastructure, integrating with its well-established post-trade systems.
The service will be powered by Crypto Finance, a Deutsche Börse Group company, which will act as sub-custodian. Crypto Finance recently secured a MiCA license (Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation), enabling it to offer services across Europe and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. This collaboration leverages Crypto Finance’s expertise in digital assets to provide a secure, regulated solution for managing crypto assets.
Jens Hachmeister, Head of Issuer Services & New Digital Markets at Clearstream, emphasised that the new service is part of Clearstream’s broader strategy to digitise financial markets, offering clients easy access to crypto assets while maintaining the security of established post-trading systems.
Bitcoin & Ethereum
Initially, the service will support Bitcoin and Ethereum, with plans for expansion based on demand. Clients using Clearstream’s International Central Securities Depository (ICSD) can access these services through their existing accounts in Clearstream Banking S.A. The solution will also be compatible with traditional communication formats like Swift, ensuring a seamless process for institutions engaging with digital assets, according to a Deutsche Börse Group press release.
