Clearstream has announced plans to build a digital securities infrastructure designed to support both traditional and tokenised assets within a single post-trade framework.

According to the company, the platform will be introduced in stages during 2026 and 2027, subject to regulatory approval. It is intended to support the full securities lifecycle, including issuance, distribution, settlement, custody, asset servicing, liquidity and financing.

The infrastructure would allow clients to hold traditional securities, digital securities and different forms of cash within the same portfolio. It is also intended to provide institutional access to blockchain-based assets, including stablecoins and security tokens.

Settlement and collateral use cases

Clearstream says the platform is being developed with clients and market participants and will support use cases including tokenised securities issuance, settlement on blockchain networks and the reuse of assets as collateral across multiple transactions.

The infrastructure is planned to cover assets regulated under both the EU’s MiFID and MiCA frameworks.

In announcing the initiative, Stephanie Eckermann, member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Börse Group and chairwoman of Clearstream, described it as “Europe’s first digital securities infrastructure serving clients globally”.

The project builds on a number of existing digital initiatives at Clearstream, including its D7 issuance platform, crypto custody services operating under MiCA, and digital financing services.

According to the company, Clearstream issues more than 5 million securities annually, holds €22 trillion in assets under custody and provides access to 60 markets worldwide.
