VIDEO | As institutional investors are seeking exposure to alternative assets, operational teams face the diverse and often challenging administration processes that they come with. At the PostTrade 360° Nordic conference, this Northern Trust-hosted session saw Scott Bachmann, EMEA Head of Front Office Solutions, discuss the situation with Senior Vice President Mikkel Mördrup.

On one level, the topic of alternative-asset exposures is not a post-trade one as such, Mikkel Mördrup mentions at the start. Yet, the trend among institutions to increasingly direct their investments towards alternative assets carries notable implications also for the operations. For background, Scott Bachmann shows figures from the past spring’s “Nordic Investor Insight” survey, showing expectations for growing exposures to, most of all, private debt/loans. Green buildings and health tech are among the promising and growing areas accommodating large investment in total.

The investment industry’s well-known cost pressures form an important part of the backdrop, and so does the ongoing movement of processing into cloud computing environments.

Outsourcing

One question for the investor institutions (discussed about half-way into the video) is how they should organise their administration. On one hand, new technology such as artificial intelligence offers services that can automatically extract and structure the relevant data from the varied range of PDF files and other inputs. But then, if many such services are employed in parallel, operations managers risk finding themselves busy juggling contracts instead. Outsourcing that management to a more holistic service partner could be the option to consider, yet generally, Mikkel Mördrup and Scott Bachmann observed that major investor institutions in the Nordic region still make little use of outsourcing when compared with their colleagues through continental Europe and the world outside.
